Pollution and Trash in Our Oceans:

Pollution and trash in our oceans cause harm to humans and marine life. There are many forms of pollution, from industrial waste and sewage to plastics and forgotten fishing gear such as nets and line. Beach goers become sick from swimming in polluted waters and every year hundreds of beaches are closed or posted as unhealthy. Due to large amounts of chemicals in our ocean, people are warned to limit their consumption of certain types of fish and seafood.

Plastic is not biodegradable, nor does it decompose. Instead, the sun breaks it down into smaller and smaller pieces. Still, those tiny pieces of plastic never go away. These small pieces of plastic, ranging from bright blues and reds to blacks and whites, closely resemble what would be natural food for many marine animals. Plastic bags resembling jelly fish, tiny plastic pieces that look identical to fish eggs, small krill, and plankton, are unavoidably digested. There are so many pieces of this plastic floating in our oceans that they out number plankton on average of 8 to 1 (in some areas of the ocean, the number is higher). Every year, hundreds of thousands of animals and birds die from indigestion or entanglement of trash in our oceans.
